Bio

The BackChat are an Auckland based four piece that offer up a spacious and slinky mix of old school hip hop and modern indie rock to create a fresh new take on Alt RnB. Bekah Smith, Evon Lavea, Jess Hix and Michael Anderson each come from different musical backgrounds but it’s their united love of hip hop influences like Anderson Paak., Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino, and The Internet that tie the whole thing together.

After a series of releases in 2019 The BackChat have released a new Double Track in 2022 in anticipation for their summer shows.

Conspirator is the latest release from The BackChat and was written in the midst of lockdown. The track captures the listener in the emotion of the last two years. Released alongside a new music video, Conspirator explores the frustration, angst, and confusion of being at a standstill, unsure of who to blame.
